?A quick eye exam could help you avoid vision loss from age-related macular degeneration, also called AMD,? he said. ?AMD is not rare. Millions of people over age 50 have vision loss from AMD throughout the United States. It is a serious issue.?

According to Prevent Blindness America, AMD is a disease that affects a part of the eye called the macula. The condition can make things look blurry or wavy. It can even lead to a blind spot in your central vision. While your peripheral vision might remain good, AMD can make it difficult to focus on anything right in front of you.

?The loss of central vision that comes from AMD can be debilitating,? Disparti said. ?Not being able to focus makes basic life tasks difficult or impossible to perform. These can include driving a car, reading and writing, looking at a computer screen, recognizing people and even walking around your own house.?

Most people with macular degeneration have what is known as ?dry AMD,? according to the Macular Degeneration Partnership (MDP). Dry AMD usually causes vision loss that is less severe than the less common ?wet AMD.? However, there are surgical and medicinal treatments for wet AMD, while little can be done for dry AMD, the MDP says.

The good news is that there are things people can do to decrease their chances of developing AMD or decrease the disease?s impact. The MDP suggests:

Getting regular eye examinations;

Improving one?s diet with foods that have less fat and cholesterol;

Doing more physical activity;

Stopping smoking; and

Wearing sunglasses and a hat or visor to shield the eyes from dangerous UV rays.

Disparti, the Cleveland disability claims attorney, stressed that people who have lost their vision due to AMD or other causes should talk to a qualified Ohio benefits attorney to see if they qualify for blindness-related SSDI or SSI payments.

?A person who is unable to work because of blindness caused by AMD might be entitled to receive cash benefits from Social Security?s disability programs,? Disparti said.

Metro Dash – Louisville

Start Times: You will be able to select your preferred start time during registration. We make every effort to accommodate your preferred start time, but it is not guaranteed. You will receive an email one week prior to race day with your official start time. If you are competing to win you must select an "elite" preferred start time. Only elite start times will be eligible to receive awards.

"Elite" start times: If you are coming to Metro Dash to compete, then register for an "elite" start time. The top 20 fastest males and the top 20 fastest females from the "elite" waves will run the course a second time at 10:30 AM. Each athlete's second finish time will be added to his/her's first finish time and averaged. The top three male and female athletes with the fastest average finish times win.

Team Ticket Types: Metro Dash offers a team discount of per athlete when registering for a team ticket type. While teams are encouraged to stay together during the race, they are not required to. There are no team awards, and all athletes are timed and scored on an individual basis.

Awards/Divisions: Metro Dash has two divisions:

Male Open
Female Open

Every athlete is timed and scored on an individual basis regardless of the ticket type purchased. Only athletes who registered for an "elite" start time are eligible for awards. The awards ceremony will be held at 12pm. Awards will be given to the following:

Top 3 Males
Top 3 Females

Heroes Team Challenge: To be eligible to compete in the Heroes Team Challenge you must show a valid military, law enforcement, or Fire/EMS identification. The Heroes Team Challenge is completely separate from the regular Metro Dash race and is timed and scored accordingly. Teams of two "Heroes" will compete against each other during this challenge. The standard Metro Dash course is adapted slightly for the Heroes Team Challenge and all Heroes will be required to wear boots, fatigues (BDU's), and a 30lb weighted vest (supplied by Metro Dash). The top 3 Heroes teams will be awarded and times will be compiled and averaged to determine the fastest group (ie. Military vs. Law Enforcement vs. Fire/EMS). Metro Dash will donate 0 to a charity that benefits the overall winning group.

What's Included: Registration fees include a race t-shirt, finisher award, and one hell of a challenging obstacle course race.

Packet Pick-up: Packet pick-up will take place from 6:00am-1:30pm on race day. We require athletes to arrive and check-in a minimum of 1 hour before their start time.

Parking: Parking is available onsite for per car.

Spectators: Spectators are welcome at Metro Dash. There will be plenty of action for spectators to enjoy on race day.

Waiver: All competitors must sign a waiver prior to competing in any Metro Dash event.

Nonprofit Support: Metro Dash proudly supports the Navy SEAL Foundation.
