St. Louis motorcycle accident lawyer Zane T. Cagle today said the state Highway Patrol?s focus on motorcycles in its ?Revised Missouri Statute of the Month? is appropriate for March. He encourages bikers of all types to heed the Patrol?s advice to review regulations and safety procedures.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol?s website spotlights a different state statute each month to advise the public of changes in laws pertaining to the legal and safe operation of motor vehicles and water craft.
The March advisory says that because of mild weather and higher gas prices, motorcycle riding has remained popular this winter. It is expected to pick up as spring approaches.
The Patrol?s page also provides the entire state statute, several safety tips and a discussion of the risks of motorcycle riding.
?Motorcycle fatalities represent approximately 10 percent of all Missouri highway fatalities each year, yet motorcycles represent approximately 2.6 percent of all registered vehicles in Missouri,? the patrol says. ?One of the main reasons motorcyclists are killed in crashes is because the motorcycle itself provides no protection in a crash.?
Missouri law requires that ?every person operating or riding as a passenger on any motorcycle ? shall wear protective headgear at all times the vehicle is in motion.? A state Senate bill (SB 28) to exempt motorcycle riders who are 21 years old or older stalled in the transportation committee last May.
?Motorcycle riders are vulnerable to serious injury or death because of the nature of their vehicle and because of the negligence and recklessness of other motorists,? Cagle said. ?The law should do everything possible to promote motorcycle safety. Motorcyclists should also take the law and their responsibility for their own safety seriously.?
