African American Firsts: Famous Little-Known and Unsung Triumphs of Blacks in America
Did you know that…Ralph Bunche was the first African American to win the Nobel Peace Prize.Tony Dungy was the first African American NFL coach to win a Super Bowl game. Eric Holder became the first African American to serve as United States Attorney General. Ella Fitzgerald and Count Basie were the first African Americans to win Grammy awards. An African American doctor performed the first open-heart surgery. Excluded from history books, overlooked in classrooms, and neglected by media, African Americans have long been denied an accurate picture of their contributions to our nation, from colonial days to the present. But times have changed and the record will be set straight. From the inventor of the traffic light and the gas mask to winners of an Oscar and the Olympic gold, this authoritative resource reveals over 450 “firsts” by African Americans—wonderful accomplishments achieved often despite poverty, discrimination, and racism. Leaders in government, entertainment, education, science and medicine, the law, military, and in the business world, African Americans have made their mark. African American Firsts is a clear reflection of that prideful legacy, and a signpost to an even greater future. “African American Firsts works, works well, and works brilliantly.” —St. Louis Post-Dispatch “For browsing or serious queries on great achievements by blacks in America.” —Booklist “Fascinating…an excellent source for browsing and for locating facts that are hard to find elsewhere.” —School Library Journal “Reveals African American history as Potter had never been taught in predominantly white schools.” —Publishers Weekly “I recommend this book, a tool with innumerable possibilities which will help individuals understand…the contributions and inventions of African Americans.” —The late Dr.

The Age Of Sacred
The Age of Sacred Terror: Radical Islam’s War against America
Did the Republican crusade to bring down President Bill Clinton ultimately cause a shift of attention from the need to protect the nation against Islamic terror threats? Benjamin and Simon, who served in Clinton’s White House as counterterrorism experts, explain how the former president’s “obsession” with getting Osama bin Laden was unavoidably sidetracked by the multiple investigations into his personal life, not to mention the enmity of Clinton’s own FBI director, Louis Freeh. Freeh, the authors claim, arrogantly refused to follow the orders of Attorney General Janet Reno (whom he reported to), thus preventing key data on terrorist threats from getting into the right hands.

Celebrities who decide to get high often wind up needing to call in a drug crime attorney. In fact, theatrical or musical performers get in trouble with their drugs-of-choice more than the average Joe does.
Sensitive artist types often like to chill out or increase energy in order to enhance their talent or perhaps just because they have big bucks and like to party. The blues and jazz performers of yesteryear liked their alcohol and heroin as well as a slew of other mood alterations. Some singers or writers get hooked on substances as a way to help them create. Many artists feel that it is a way of accessing creativity or tuning into their muse. Here are some famous icons who dabbled, got caught and needed a drug crime attorney:
- Louis Armstrong: The famous jazz musician was busted for marijuana back in the early 1930′s but the charge was reportedly dropped later. Louis was well known for his trumpet playing and his love of wine, women and song.
- Hoyt Axton: Hoyt Axton and his wife got nabbed for having nearly a pound of marijuana at their home in the late 1990′s. They claimed it was being used to alleviate stress but that was back before medical uses were being supported publicly.
- Chuck Berry: Chuck was caught with a variety of substances over the years including pot, cocaine, hashish and underage girlfriends. He could belt out as well as write some catchy tunes but unfortunately got caught himself on several occasions.
- David Bowie: Bowie was arrested in the 1970′s for cannabis possession but didn’t serve jail time. He was also a renowned cocaine user which reportedly has a connection with his “Ziggy Stardust” alter ego.
- James Brown: James Brown was caught with weed plus had a few other run-ins with the law related to guns and high speed vehicular pursuits. He became addicted to prescription pain killers. It’s no wonder that one of his hit songs was “I Feel Good.”
- Lenny Bruce: Lenny Bruce was a comic who was not only busted for pot a couple of times during the 1960′s but also got in trouble with the law for saying off-color words during his shows.
- Notorious B.I.G.: This entertainer got arrested for selling cocaine, possessing cannabis and being involved with illegal automatic weapons. He spent time in jail before his trial even happened and eventually died before his time. The rapper’s initials reportedly stood for “business instead of games.”
- Ken Kesey: Ken Kesey was a famous writer who wrote “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest” and more. He was a proponent of LSD mind expansion but was arrested for pot.
Over the years, celebrities have enjoyed imbibing a variety of mood altering substances. Just because they are or were rich and famous doesn’t mean they are above the law. When arrests happen to movie stars, musicians and writers for possessing or dealing illegal narcotics, these talented icons need a savvy drug crime attorney just like average citizens.

New Orleans – Iberville: St. Louis Cemetery #1 – Sullivan/Gayarré/Boré Tomb

This isolated platform concrete tomb (PNTHNOC 224) was erected at St. Louis Cemetery #1 in 1820 and houses members of the Sullivan, Gayarré and Boré families. Among the interred are Jean Etienne de Boré (1741-1820) and Charles Etienne Arthur Gayarré (1805-1895).
Etienne de Boré was the first person to hold the title of Mayor New Orleans. Though born in Kaskaskia, Illinois, he was schooled in Europe and entered French military service in the King’s Musketeers. He left the army with the rank of captain and owned a plantation a few miles above the City of New Orleans where he originally cultivated indigo. When this product lost its market as a result of competition from Guatemala, he turned his attention to the manufacture of sugar, setting up sugar mill where, in 1795, had, with the aid of two Cubans, Mendez and Lopez, succeeded in producing the first granulated sugar ever known in the colony. Boré was appointed mayor by Governor William C. C. Claiborne in 1803, only to resign the following year.
Charles Gayarré, de Boré’s grandson by way of his mother, was an American historian and writer, chiefly remembered for his histories of Louisiana. Gayarré was a member of the Pennsylvania bar before being elected as a memeber of the House of Representatives of Louisiana in 1830, Louisiana Deputy Attorney General in 1831, and Judge of the City Court of New Orleans in 1833. In 1834, he was elected as a Jackson Democrat to the U.S. Senate, but resigned without taking his seat due to ill-health. Gayarré spent the next eight years traveling Europe and collecting historical material from the French and Spanish archives. In 1844-1845 and in 1856-1857 he was again a member of the state House of Representatives, and from 1845 to 1853 was Secretary of State of Louisiana. In 1853 he failed to be elected to the U.S. Congress. Best known as the historian of Louisiana, he wrote Histoire de la Louisiane (1847); Romance of the History of Louisiana (1848); Louisiana: its Colonial History and Romance (1851), reprinted in A History of Louisiana; History of Louisiana: the Spanish Domination (1854); Philip II of Spain (1866); and A History of Louisiana (4 vols., 1866). He also wrote also several dramas and romances, the best of the latter being Fernando de Lemos (1872).
Saint Louis Cemetery #1, which replaced the now vanished St. Peter Cemetery as the main burial ground in New Orleans following the fire of 1788, is the oldest of three Roman Catholic cemeteries bearing the same name. Spanning just one square block on the north side of Basin Street, one block from the inland border of the French Quarter and bordering the Iberville housing project built on top of Storyville, St. Louis #1 is the final resting place of over 100,000 dead. The above ground vaults, mostly constructed in the 18th and 19th century and currently is varied states of disrepair, are said to be needed because the ground water levels in New Orleans make burials impossible, but in reality owe much of their existence to French and Spanish tradition.
Famous New Orleanians buried in St. Louis #1 include Homer Plessy, the plaintiff from the landmark 1896 Plessy v. Ferguson Supreme Court decision on civil rights; Benjamin Latrobe, America’s first professional architect; Ernest N. "Dutch" Morial, the first African-American Mayor of New Orleans; Paul Morphy, one of the earliest world champions of chess; and Marie Laveau, a legendary Voodoo priestess, whose unmarked grave in the Glapion family crypt is perpetually decorated with gifts and marked x’s or crosses left by visitors.

Entombed in this crypt are the remains of Louis Moreau-Lislet (October 7, 1767 – December 3, 1832), who published ‘explication des lois criminelles du territoire d’ orleans’ in 1806, which led to his commission to co-write the Civil Code which was adopted by the territorial legislature in 1808. n 1817 he was appointed Attorney General but resigned to be a state senator. In 1819 he and Edward DeBirgny prepared a revised code which became law in 1825.
