An important new study released by a team of scientists at RhinoCyte? Inc., Louisville, Ky., details promising results on the effectiveness of olfactory (nasal) stem cells in repairing spinal cord damage resulting from the most common cause of these injuries ? contusions (bruising) due to major trauma. Their study is featured in the current issue of the Journal of Neurodegeneration and Regeneration.
The study, led by Dr. Fred Roisen, has great implication for the estimated 5 million people worldwide affected by spinal cord injuries ? 1.275 million of them in the United States alone, where the cost of treatment exceeds $ 40.5 billion each year. Current treatment options are limited to retaining and retraining mobility; no drug therapies are available, but studies pertaining to stem cell treatments are showing great promise for these as well as other neurodegenerative conditions.
A previous study by the group made national headlines when lab rats whose spinal cords had been partially cut in the region of the animal?s neck in a way that disabled their front right paws were able to regain significant use of their paws after being injected with olfactory stem cells. The investigative team took the cells from the olfactory neurosensory epithelium ? the part of the nose that controls the sense of smell ? in adult volunteer donors who were already undergoing elective sinus surgery. The removal of the stem cells has no effect on the patients? ability to smell. Also, the minimally invasive surgery is frequently done on an outpatient basis so the cells are readily available and, as such, are a potentially promising source of therapeutic stem cells.
The researchers isolated the stem cells and increased their numbers in the laboratory by growing them in an enriched solution. The cells were then injected into a group of lab rats. Twelve weeks later, these animals had regained control of their affected paws while a control group that received no cells had not.
This latest study continued that original work, by concentrating on contusions caused by blunt force trauma such as that resulting from an automobile accident or a fall. Spinal cord and head trauma are common among soldiers suffering serious combat injuries, too.
Two independent sets of experiments were conducted, beginning two weeks after the rats had received contusions administered in a computer-controlled surgery. In the first group, 27 out of 41 rats were injected with olfactory stem cells, while the remainder received none. In the second group, 16 rats were treated with olfactory stem cells, 11 received no treatment and 10 received stem cells grown from human skin to see how the olfactory cells compared with another stem cell source.
The results once again showed great promise, with 40 percent of the rats treated with the olfactory-derived stem cells showing significant improvement after just six weeks, compared to 30 percent of those treated with human skin-derived cells and only 9 percent of those receiving no treatment. In addition, the olfactory stem cell-treated rats showing the highest rate of improvement recovered much faster than the other groups.
?This is very exciting on numerous levels,? said Dr. Roisen. ?As an autologous cell source ? that is, the patient is both the donor and the recipient ? olfactory stem cells bypass the time a patient must wait while a suitable donor is found, which can be critical to the outcome of the patient?s treatment. They also eliminate the need for immunosuppressive drugs, which have numerous negative side effects.
?And just as importantly, stem cells taken from the nose of an adult do away with the ethical concerns associated with using embryonic stem cells.?
The researchers are in the final stages of their enabling studies, which are scheduled to be completed by summer; Phase 1 safety studies could begin as soon as early next year.
Dr. Roisen is chief science officer and co-founder of RhinoCtye?, and a professor and chair of the University of Louisville School of Medicine?s Department of Anatomical Sciences and Neurobiology. The original work forming the basis for the contusion study was conducted by Dr. Roisen?s group at UofL and has been licensed to RhinoCtye? (http://www.rhinocyte.com), a company he co-founded in 2005 with Dr. Chengliang Lu and Dr. Kathleen Klueber to develop and commercialize diagnostic tools and therapies for stem cell treatment of multiple degenerative and traumatic neurological diseases. RhinoCyte? currently has three patents for olfactory stem cell treatments approved in the United States, Australia and Israel, with others pending worldwide.

Over 30,000 acres of land in the Lower Mississippi Valley have been converted back to bottomland hardwood forests under the nation?s first forest carbon offset project to earn registration with the widely respected Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). TerraCarbon announced its support in the registration and monitoring of the project, and Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) announced its verification of the project.
The project, estimated to remove more than 6 million tons of carbon dioxide over its 60-year term, was funded by Dynegy, Inc. and involved planting trees on state and federally protected lands in Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama and Oklahoma. TerraCarbon prepared the project design documentation for registration and implemented the first monitoring event; SCS validated the project design and verified that the project has removed more than 521,144 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere since its inception. Together, SCS and TerraCarbon provide companies with support services to quantify and certify the climate benefits of offset projects, helping justify further investments in activities that fight climate change, such as reforestation.
?The Lower Mississippi Valley offset project not only represents a way forward in combating climate change, it also restores one of the area?s biologically valuable forest areas,? said Dr. Robert J. Hrubes, Senior Vice President of SCS.
Most of the Lower Mississippi Valley?s original bottomland forests was removed by logging in the early 1900s and was further reduced by conversion to agriculture in the 1960s and 70s. Less than 30% of the original forest cover in the Lower Mississippi Valley remains today. Under the project, lands were replanted with native bottomland hardwood species including bald cypress and bottomland oaks. In addition to removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the project restores important habitat for waterfowl, migrant songbirds, and other wildlife, and helps local communities by reducing soil erosion, increasing flood storage, and improving water quality.

Metro Dash – Louisville

Start Times: You will be able to select your preferred start time during registration. We make every effort to accommodate your preferred start time, but it is not guaranteed. You will receive an email one week prior to race day with your official start time. If you are competing to win you must select an "elite" preferred start time. Only elite start times will be eligible to receive awards.
"Elite" start times: If you are coming to Metro Dash to compete, then register for an "elite" start time. The top 20 fastest males and the top 20 fastest females from the "elite" waves will run the course a second time at 10:30 AM. Each athlete's second finish time will be added to his/her's first finish time and averaged. The top three male and female athletes with the fastest average finish times win.
Team Ticket Types: Metro Dash offers a team discount of per athlete when registering for a team ticket type. While teams are encouraged to stay together during the race, they are not required to. There are no team awards, and all athletes are timed and scored on an individual basis.
Awards/Divisions: Metro Dash has two divisions:
- Male Open
- Female Open
Every athlete is timed and scored on an individual basis regardless of the ticket type purchased. Only athletes who registered for an "elite" start time are eligible for awards. The awards ceremony will be held at 12pm. Awards will be given to the following:
- Top 3 Males
- Top 3 Females
Heroes Team Challenge: To be eligible to compete in the Heroes Team Challenge you must show a valid military, law enforcement, or Fire/EMS identification. The Heroes Team Challenge is completely separate from the regular Metro Dash race and is timed and scored accordingly. Teams of two "Heroes" will compete against each other during this challenge. The standard Metro Dash course is adapted slightly for the Heroes Team Challenge and all Heroes will be required to wear boots, fatigues (BDU's), and a 30lb weighted vest (supplied by Metro Dash). The top 3 Heroes teams will be awarded and times will be compiled and averaged to determine the fastest group (ie. Military vs. Law Enforcement vs. Fire/EMS). Metro Dash will donate 0 to a charity that benefits the overall winning group.
What's Included: Registration fees include a race t-shirt, finisher award, and one hell of a challenging obstacle course race.
Packet Pick-up: Packet pick-up will take place from 6:00am-1:30pm on race day. We require athletes to arrive and check-in a minimum of 1 hour before their start time.
Parking: Parking is available onsite for per car.
Spectators: Spectators are welcome at Metro Dash. There will be plenty of action for spectators to enjoy on race day.
Waiver: All competitors must sign a waiver prior to competing in any Metro Dash event.
Nonprofit Support: Metro Dash proudly supports the Navy SEAL Foundation.
